2015 Drive for the Podium

Monday June 22nd saw over 175 people gather for a day of golf, dinner, and celebration of the legacy of Mark Lowry, the former Executive Director of Sport for the Canadian Olympic Committee. Through the generosity of sponsors, and attendees, over $26,000 was raised to support the Mark Lowry Memorial Sport Excellence Fund.

Over the past ten years, funds have been provided to a number of worthy sports to help aspiring athletes reach their athletic goals. The Lowry family will be considering the allocation of the remaining funds over the coming months. Information will be posted on this site and through press releases.

The Lowry family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to all who have supported the tournament over its 10 years, be that through sponsorship, donations, playing, purchasing raffle squares or auction items, donating auction items, or attending one or more dinners. The family is especially indebted to those who have volunteered their time as a member of the organizing committee, as helpers on tournament day, as athletes who have demonstrated their sport so passionately, and as Olympians and Paralympians who have come to support the day. You have been part of raising over $250,000 in Mark Lowry's name for a cause that he believed in – helping put more Canadian athletes on the podium.

Final Mark Lowry Drive for the Podium Golf Tournament Raises $26,000
for Aspiring Olympians and Paralympians

(Ottawa, July 6, 2015) – An energetic and fun-filled group of 175 people made up of sport leaders, high performance coaches and athletes, sponsors, family and friends, as well as members of the Ottawa business community came together on Monday, June 22nd at the Stonebridge Golf Club to honour the late Mark Lowry and raise $26,000 for Olympic and Paralympic podium potential sports.

This was the tenth annual edition of the Mark Lowry Drive for the Podium golf tournament, which was first held in 2006 in an effort to raise funds for the Mark Lowry Memorial Sport Excellence Fund which was initiated in Lowry’s memory when he passed away on October 22, 2005 following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. One of Lowry’s greatest legacies was the establishment of the Own the Podium program, designed to increase Canada’s medal haul at the winter and summer Olympic Games. The 2015 edition was the final tournament which has raised close to $250,000 over its lifespan.

CBC Sports veteran on-air announcer Scott Russell was the emcee for the evening which featured a welcome from Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal, on-course interviews with golfers, a final Oban scotch toast to Lowry and closing remarks from former COC president Mike Chambers. Olympians in attendance included Nancy Brawley (Diving 1968, 1972), Dan Thompson (swimming 1980), Bill Meyer (Water Polo 1984), Sue Holloway (canoe 1976, 1984, cross country skiing 1976) and Ole Sorensen (wrestling 1972). World silver and bronze curling medallist Lisa Weagle was also in attendance.

“Brendan and I are extremely grateful for the support that so many people have given to this tournament over the past 10 years”, commented Jennifer Lowry, Mark’s widow. “You have all contributed to a legacy that was Mark’s passion and for that we say thank you and merci.”

Since the beginning funds have been donated to various high performance sport projects or programs designed to give Canadian athletes and coaches a competitive edge over their competitors. These special projects include the Mark Lowry Ergometer Centre for Rowing in Victoria, the Mark Lowry Portable Dry-Land Training Area for diving at the Talisman Centre in Calgary, as well as a Dry Land High Performance Centre at the Rideau Canoe Club in Ottawa, the Mark Lowry Sweeping Broom for curling, the Mark Lowry Recovery Room for swimming and for specialized equipment for Paralympic cycling initiatives. In 2013, $20,000 was provided to Speed Skating Canada to help fund the Mark Lowry Speed Skating Tech Shop at the Calgary Olympic Oval and in 2015 a contribution was made to Skate Canada to help fund the VeriSkate Video Analysis tool.

The Lowry Family will be reviewing potential projects over the coming months to determine where the next contribution will be made.

A long-time contributor to Canadian sport at both the national and local levels, Mark Lowry was the Executive Director of Sport of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) from 1997 to 2005 and was the Executive Director for Diving Canada (1979 to 1986), Rowing Canada (1986 to 1992), and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (1992 to 1997). During his 25-year career in sport, Mark worked tirelessly to advance the cause of athletes and coaches in Canada and was known for his tremendous passion and infectious enthusiasm. He envisioned and brought to life the Own the Podium program by fostering trust and communication between key stakeholders in Canadian sport.

2011 Drive for the Podium a Huge Success!

Thanks to everyone who took part in the 2011 Mark Lowry Drive for the Podium Golf Tournament held on June 20th at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.

The weather was gorgeous and the 150+ attending had a great day. Your generosity was exceptional and we raised $21,000 this year, not easy in these challenging financial times. The proceeds of this tournament are used to assist current and aspiring Olympic athletes and coaches. Over the past six years that the tournament has been held over $150,000 has been raised.

We were honoured to have former Olympians Alex Baumann (swimming), Sue Holloway (cross country skiing, canoe/kayak), Alison Korn (rowing), Ole Sorensen (wrestling) and Scott Cranham (diving) take part in the day.

Emcee Scott Russell of CBC Sports did his usual wonderful job at keeping the evening program rolling and the Lowry family truly appreciates his continued support of the tournament.

Auctioneer Kent Browne also provided his services and helped raise a significant amount through the live auction.

Thanks go to our many sponsors (see below) and auction prize donors for their generosity as well. Without them this event would not be near the success that it is.

Watch this web site for news of where the next contribution will be made from the Mark Lowry Sport Excellence Fund.
